How to Get IRS Transcripts — Online, by Mail, and Through a Representative

Direct answer

You can get IRS transcripts free from IRS.gov using ID.me, by mailing Form 4506-T, or through a CPA, EA, or attorney who has your Form 2848 authorization. Account transcripts show balances and posting history; return transcripts show what was filed.

Transcripts are the source records behind every balance, notice, and collection action. Getting them yourself is the fastest way to see what the IRS actually has before you pay a firm or make a plan.

Before you begin

  • Social Security number or ITIN for the taxpayer on the account
  • Email and phone that can receive verification codes
  • Government-issued photo ID if identity verification is required
  • About 10–20 minutes for a first-time IRS online account setup

Request transcripts online (IRS.gov)

The IRS provides transcripts online through your IRS account. Most people sign in with ID.me — the same identity service used for many government sites.

  • Go to IRS.gov and open Get your tax records and transcripts.
  • Sign in with ID.me or create an account and complete identity verification.
  • Choose the transcript type you need — account transcript for balances and posting history; return transcript for what was filed.
  • Download PDF copies and save them securely on your device.

Request transcripts by mail

If you cannot verify online, mail Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return. Processing can take several weeks. Use the address on the current form instructions for your state.

  • Complete Form 4506-T for the years and transcript types you need.
  • Sign as the taxpayer (or authorized representative with Form 2848 attached).
  • Mail to the IRS address listed on the form for your region.

Through your Authorized Representative

An authorized representative with a valid Form 2848 can request transcripts on your behalf through the IRS e-Services portal. Many households start here when they already have a professional — but you can still request your own copies to follow along.

What to do with transcripts once you have them

Reading raw transcripts is tedious — transaction codes, module numbers, and posting dates are not written for households. Brevitax organizes account transcripts into a year-by-year timeline so you can see balances, notices, and what changed without decoding IRS codes alone.

Only upload transcripts to services you trust. Brevitax encrypts uploaded files and uses them only to build your account view — never sold.

Common questions

Are IRS transcripts free?

Yes. The IRS provides transcripts at no charge through IRS.gov, by mail, or through an authorized representative.

Which transcript shows my balance due?

An IRS account transcript shows balances, penalties, interest, payments posted, and notices issued. A return transcript shows what was filed on the return itself.

How far back can I get transcripts?

Online access typically covers recent years; older years may require Form 4506-T by mail. Exact availability depends on the transcript type and account history.

Can I get transcripts for a business?

Yes. Business accounts use EIN-based requests — online through IRS business accounts or Form 4506-T for partnerships and corporations.
