Enrolled agent jobs
Direct answer
An enrolled agent job in tax relief is licensed IRS representation: you speak for the taxpayer on collection, examination, and appeals, and you decide program shape from transcripts and financials — not from a sales script.
Relief firms hire EAs to carry the CAF file. The work is installment agreements, currently-not-collectible, offers in compromise, penalty abatement, and exam — often next to a case manager who runs the calendar.

What enrolled agents do in relief practices
You pull or read transcripts, reconstruct the account, and choose a path the IRS will actually accept. That is different from seasonal prep: the file is usually late, incomplete, or already in collection.
Many shops want someone who can both represent and review what enrollment sold. The EA is the person who says no to an OIC that cannot qualify.
- File and maintain Form 2848 / CAF representation
- Build 433s, IA, CNC, and OIC packages from the IRS record plus household financials
- Talk to ACS, Revenue Officers, and Appeals
- Review case-manager work before anything goes to the Service
What this role is not
It is not an enrollment or closer job. If the listing pays only on signed agreements and never mentions CAF or Circular 230, it is sales wearing an EA title.
It is also not a generic “tax analyst” mill. This board requires a work email and a firm profile. Remote EA roles should name licensed states or say US-wide.
Who hires — and what they look for
Tax relief firms, CPA firms adding representation, and law firms that need collection coverage. Remote is common; some states still want an EA who can appear locally.
SEE exam plus a current EA card is the floor. Firms then look for collection hours, 433 fluency, and whether you have sat with a Revenue Officer. PTIN alone is not enough.
- Credential: active enrolled agent; some firms add CPA or attorney
- Workplace: remote-US, hybrid, or a metro office
- Pay: salary is typical; some add production on closed programs, not on enrollment
- Tools: transcripts, a case record, and a reviewer — not a call script

Common questions
Do I need to be an enrolled agent to represent taxpayers in collection?
To represent before the IRS you need an enrolled agent, CPA, or attorney, and a CAF number on Form 2848. Unlicensed staff can prepare packages; they cannot appear as the practitioner.
Are enrolled agent jobs remote?
Many are remote inside the United States. Listings should say US-wide or name the states where the license must be used. “Work from anywhere” with no firm is a warning sign on this board.
How is an EA job in tax relief different from an EA job in tax prep?
Prep is returns. Relief is the account after filing — balances, levies, liens, unfiled years, and collection alternatives. The same credential; a different file.
